Transport Fever 3 Performance & Troubleshooting — Low FPS, Stuttering, Crashes & VRAM

Quick answer: Low FPS is usually GPU-bound if it happens while the game is paused, and CPU-bound if it only shows up when you raise the simulation speed. Work out which one you have first — lower resolution and shadow/texture settings for a GPU limit, or simplify the map and mods for a CPU limit. Build 40415, now on the Steam preview branch, is the first official batch of stability and performance fixes (camera, layer views, VRAM), but it is a preview build, not Stable.

Build 40415 is not yet pushed to Stable. If you haven't joined the preview branch, you're still on the launch build, and none of the 40415 changes below apply to you yet.

What build 40415 changes

Urban Games developer UG-Sam confirmed build 40415 is on the Steam preview branch as "the first set of stability and performance improvements as well as other fixes." The official release notes confirm these performance items (PREVIEW_RELEASE_NOTE):

  • Camera movement rendering performance — improved
  • Layer views — rendering performance improved while layer views are active
  • Video memory (VRAM) usage — improved under certain conditions
  • Multiple crash / error fixes — see the specific release-note entries; this does not mean "all crashes are fixed"

Read "what 40415 targets" literally. It targets specific rendering paths and a set of named crash/error fixes — it is not a blanket performance guarantee.

Low FPS

The first question is when the FPS is low, because it points at a different bottleneck (OFFICIAL):

SymptomMost likely bottleneck
Frame rate low even while pausedGPU-bound
Raising game speed barely speeds up the simulationCPU-bound

If you haven't joined the preview branch, the launch build is what you're seeing — 40415's camera/layer/VRAM improvements don't apply to you yet.

GPU bottleneck

SYMPTOM → CAUSE → CHECK → FIX

  • Symptom: low FPS that doesn't improve when you pause the game
  • Cause: the graphics card is the limit — resolution and quality settings cost too much
  • Check: watch GPU usage; a GPU pinned near full load while paused is the tell
  • Fix (OFFICIAL): lower resolution (1920×1080 instead of 4K is the single biggest lever), then anti-aliasing, shadow quality, texture quality, and LOD. On a dual-GPU laptop, confirm the game is using the dedicated GPU, not integrated graphics

CPU / slow simulation

SYMPTOM → CAUSE → CHECK → FIX

  • Symptom: the game runs but raising speed to 2× or 4× barely makes the simulation faster
  • Cause: the simulation itself is CPU-bound — lots of vehicles, cities, industries, connections and mods all add load
  • Check: watch one CPU core; a single core pinned while the GPU idles is the tell
  • Fix (OFFICIAL): graphics settings barely help here. Reduce the workload — smaller/fewer cities, simpler networks, fewer vehicles, fewer industry and cargo connections, and fewer or lighter mods. Large maps, dense road/rail networks and complex traffic all hit the simulation hardest

When your CPU and GPU both clear the minimum spec but FPS is still low, check the other usual suspects (OFFICIAL): background apps, not enough RAM, limited VRAM, thermal throttling, power-saving settings (laptops), outdated drivers, high resolution, and demanding mods with oversized textures or complex models.

Stuttering

  • Scrolling / panning stutter in larger cities: PLAYER_REPORTED — some preview users say the worst scrolling stutter in bigger cities is mostly gone on 40415. Treat it as an early report, not a guarantee.
  • Stutter in general traces back to the same split as FPS: frame-pacing (GPU) versus simulation hitches when lots of systems update (CPU). Use the GPU/CPU checks above to decide which settings to touch.

Layer / HUD-related reports

  • Official: 40415 includes rendering performance improvements specifically while layer views are active (PREVIEW_RELEASE_NOTE).
  • Player reports: some preview users say layer and HUD interactions feel more stable (PLAYER_REPORTED). Keep this separate from the official layer-view fix — the official change covers rendering while layer views are active; the "feels more stable" impression is player-reported.

VRAM

  • Symptom: VRAM near capacity
  • Fix (OFFICIAL): lower texture quality first, then check overall GPU / RAM / VRAM usage
  • 40415 note: the preview build improves video memory usage under certain conditions (PREVIEW_RELEASE_NOTE) — not a universal VRAM reduction

Black screen / startup

These come from the official Common Issues list (OFFICIAL):

  • Black screen after changing graphics settings → press Alt+Enter to toggle fullscreen/windowed, then pick a resolution and display mode your monitor supports. If that doesn't recover, restart and reset the graphics settings.
  • Black screen on startup / freeze → update the GPU driver; on a dual-GPU system confirm the game uses the dedicated GPU (Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics, or the NVIDIA/AMD control panel).
  • Game won't start or crashes while loading (even without mods) → check the minimum spec, update drivers and OS, verify game files, remove conflicting mods, and disable overlays / monitoring / security software. Official guidance: "When troubleshooting startup problems, first try starting the game without mods."
  • Window invisible (icon in taskbar only) → it may be on another display or off-screen; Win+Shift+←/→ to move it, or Alt+Enter to window it.
  • Linux won't start → 64-bit Linux only; verify files, update the system and drivers, disable mods, and launch from a terminal to see the missing-library error. (Do not manually copy libstdc++ as older TF2 guides suggest.)
  • Mouse pointer invisible → Alt+Enter, adjust the mouse cursor option, and check overlays / remote-desktop software.

Crashes

  • What 40415 changes: multiple named crash / error fixes (PREVIEW_RELEASE_NOTE). Do not read this as "crashes are gone."
  • Player reports: some preview users say freezes and crashes "seem solved" on 40415 (PLAYER_REPORTED) — a single-player impression, not a universal fix.
  • Still being reported: Mission 7 and Linux Mod Hub crashes are still reported by some preview users (PLAYER_REPORTED) — see the section below.

Mods & performance

  • Mods add load to the CPU simulation, not just the GPU. Heavy or many mods, and mods with oversized textures or complex models, are called out in the official performance guidance (OFFICIAL).
  • 40415 contains some mod-related fixes (PREVIEW_RELEASE_NOTE).

Issues still reported on 40415

Preview is a test branch, not a finished patch. Two problems are still being reported by some preview users (PLAYER_REPORTED):

  • Mission 7 — still reported by some players
  • Linux Mod Hub crashes — still reported by some preview users

These are player-reported and should be read as "not yet confirmed fixed," not as official bug status.

How to join the preview branch

  1. Steam Library → right-click Transport Fever 3 → Properties
  2. Go to Game Versions & Betas
  3. Select the preview branch from the dropdown
  4. Steam downloads the preview build; you can switch back to the default branch the same way

Per developer and community guidance, switching branches is savegame-safe.

Quick diagnostic checklist

  • Low FPS while paused → GPU bound → lower resolution / AA / shadows / textures / LOD
  • 2× / 4× speed barely faster → CPU bound → simplify map, vehicles, industries, connections, mods
  • VRAM near full → lower texture quality
  • GPU pinned + CPU idle → GPU bound
  • Single core pinned + GPU idle → simulation bound (graphics settings won't help)
  • Black screen after graphics change → Alt+Enter
  • Won't start → verify files, update drivers, disable mods, disable overlays
  • On a laptop and slower than expected → check thermal throttling and power-saving mode
