Transport Fever 3 Vehicle Unlock Years & Dates — Official Data & Eras

Transport Fever 3 vehicle unlock years and eras

Vehicle Unlock Years, Dates & Eras

Quick answer: The official game manual does publish unlock dates for part of the roster — a full per-vehicle availability table for all 25 buses, running from 1892 to 2029, plus official building unlock years (cargo station from 1850, airfield from 1920, airport/heliport/helipad from 1950). It publishes no per-vehicle table for trains, trucks, trams, ships or planes. The official FAQ's "starting in 1900 and running to 2030 and beyond" is the roster span, not an exact unlock schedule. To see every vehicle at once, use Sandbox Mode with the no-end-year vehicle mod and a 2040 start year.

What the official manual actually publishes (this is the Information Gain)

Earlier versions of this page said flatly that no per-vehicle unlock data existed. Two official manual pages show that was too broad — one vehicle class is fully published, and every building has an official availability year:

  1. Vehicles — the manual defines the field as "Build date: The date or date range when the vehicle is available", and states that "when vehicles get outdated, they will no longer be available for purchase." Only the Busses section carries a table: all 25 entries have an Availability column, from the Droshky (1892–1915) to the King Long Merry Combo (from 2029). Trains, wagons, trucks, trams, ships and planes have no table on that page.
  2. Stations & Depots — every station and depot type has an official availability year: cargo stations from 1850, road stops and bus/tram stations tiered 1900–1950 / 1950–1980 / from 1980, airfields from 1920, airports and heliports from 1950.
  3. Official FAQ — gives the roster span and the vehicle count, but no per-vehicle schedule.

So the honest answer to "when does vehicle X unlock?" depends on the class: bus — yes, officially listed below; everything else — not published per vehicle. This page maps what is verifiable and labels the rest as community leads.

The one official timeline: 1900 to 2030 and beyond

The official FAQ describes the game as "using more than 300 vehicles across over 120+ years of transport history", "starting in 1900 and running to 2030 and beyond" (official FAQ). Media coverage renders the same span as "more than 125 years of transport evolution" (howtovideogame, D).

Two practical consequences:

  • 1900 is the FAQ's roster span, not the game's earliest date. The manual's bus table starts at 1892 and cargo stations at 1850, so pre-1900 content is officially real — do not use 1900 as a hard boundary.
  • 2030 signals a moving frontier. The roster does not stop at the present day; the FAQ's "and beyond" is the official wording, so do not read 2030 as a hard end date for content.

The same third-party guide notes that pre-1900 play is "left to modders" (D). That claim now conflicts with the official manual, which lists a cargo station from 1850 and a bus from 1892 — treat the community claim as outdated rather than a fact.

Why the community unlock-year tables disagree

Community lists do exist, and they contradict each other and the official span:

SourceWhat it claimsLevel
XMODhub vehicle unlocks guide"Vehicles unlock automatically based on the in-game calendar year, starting in 1850"; eras "Pioneer (1850–1900) / Industrial (1900–1950) / Modern (1950–2020+)"D — the 1850 figure matches the official cargo-station year, but no official vehicle is listed before 1892
Destructoid vehicle list · tposegaming train listPrussian Class T3 — 1882, 50 km/hC (two independent lists agree)
Official FAQStarts in 1900B

The 1850 start, the 1882 T3 and the 1892 Droshky all sit before the FAQ's 1900 figure. The manual resolves part of that: cargo stations really are available from 1850, and the first bus from 1892. What remains unsupported is a vehicle at 1882 — no official table lists one.

The most likely explanation (unverified hypothesis, C): the community lists are transcribing the real-world introduction year of the prototype, not the in-game unlock year. Three data points fit that pattern:

  • The Prussian T3 is a real 19th-century Prussian steam locomotive; 1882 is its real-world build era, not a published TF3 unlock date.
  • Community rosters tag the CE 6/8 II "Crocodile" with 1921; the real Swiss locomotive was built 1919–1921 (Wikipedia).
  • The same lists place diesel traction in "the 1930s" and jets near 2000 — again matching real-world history.

No list states its method, so this stays a hypothesis. It explains the conflict; it does not make any of those numbers publishable as TF3 facts.

The era progression: steam → diesel → electric → modern (community shorthand)

Urban Games publishes no era names and no era boundaries. The four-stage shorthand below is how community guides organise the roster. Use it to plan a campaign, not to date an individual vehicle.

StageRough span used by community guidesAnchor that is checkableLevel
Steam-led early game1900 → 1930s–40sSteam locomotives are in the official roster; no official end date for steamD
Early electricfrom the 1920s"Crocodile" (CE 6/8 II) tagged 1921 in community lists; real locomotive built 1919–1921D
Dieselfrom the 1930sCommunity guides place diesel replacing steam in "the 1930s"D
Modern1950 onwardJet aircraft and high-speed trains appear later in the calendarD

Important distinction: the years above are anchors for the stage, not unlock years for specific models. If you need one vehicle's availability, the only reliable method is to open its depot entry in-game — that is A-level data, and it is the method XMODhub itself recommends ("in-game stat cards located in the depot UI").

Infrastructure unlock years (official, not community estimates)

The building tiers are a separate question from vehicle unlocks — and unlike the rest of the vehicle roster, they are fully published in the official manual (Stations & Depots):

InfrastructureOfficial availabilityNotes
Cargo station / cargo through station / cargo terminus stationfrom 1850 / from 1900 / from 1900Cargo stations are the earliest 1850 tier
Road stop, bus/tram station, passenger through station, passenger terminus stationtiered 1900–1950 / 1950–1980 (or 1950–1990) / from 1980 (or from 1990)Three building generations per type
Passenger and cargo harborfrom 1900
Shipyardfrom 1900
Airfield (small planes)from 1920Small planes only
Airport (all planes and helicopters)from 1950
Heliport / helipad (helicopters)from 1950Heliport has the integrated depot needed to buy helicopters
Road / tram / train depot and maintenance buildingsfrom 1900

Two cautions:

  • These are building dates, not vehicle dates. A heliport unlocking in 1950 does not mean a specific helicopter unlocks in 1950 — see Helicopters for the heliport vs helipad distinction.
  • The tiered rows mean a station type is replaced by newer generations; the year ranges matter when you plan a 1900s or 1950s map.

The one official per-vehicle table: all 25 buses

This is the only vehicle class where the manual publishes each model's availability year (official manual — Vehicles). "From YEAR" means the bus stays purchasable after that year; a range means it retires at the end year. The same table also carries power, top speed, weight, capacity and load speed — the only official per-vehicle stats on the site.

That is the whole published per-vehicle schedule. Trains, wagons, trucks, trams, ships and planes have no availability table in the manual, so any exact year given for those classes elsewhere is community transcription — check the depot UI in-game before planning around it.

How to unlock every vehicle now (Sandbox Mode)

The calendar can be bypassed. This is a real game mechanic, documented by multiple third-party guides (D):

  1. New Game → Add Mods → Activate "Sandbox Mode", then start the game. An existing save can add it through the Load Game screen (allthings.how).
  2. Activate the no-end-year vehicle mod so older vehicles stay purchasable instead of retiring (toldrop) — community guides list it as "Vehicles: No End Year".
  3. Set the start year to 2040, or change the date mid-game. The valid date range is 1900–5000; below 1900 snaps to 1900 and 99999 snaps to 5000. Changing the date also works backwards (allthings.how).
  4. Jumping forward makes every vehicle and building from the skipped years available at once — the same source's exact wording.
  5. If a retired vehicle still does not appear in a depot, enable "Show obsolete vehicles" in the depot settings (XMODhub).

Trade-off: any of the four built-in mods disables achievements — "Achievements cannot be earned" (allthings.how).

Problem: the vehicle I want is not in the depot

Work through these in order before concluding the game is broken:

  1. Check the current in-game year. The catalogue is calendar-gated, so a 1920s start hides modern stock.
  2. Check the depot's filter. Obsolete or retired vehicles can be hidden; enable "Show obsolete vehicles" (D).
  3. Check the region and the vehicle's class. Some models are tied to a region or a cargo specialisation rather than being globally available.
  4. Check whether you are looking for a Deluxe vehicle. The six Deluxe models (Concorde, London Bus, Trans-Europ-Express, Peterbilt 359, Hong Kong Tram, Sikorsky S-76 Spirit) come from the Deluxe Edition — see Vehicle List.

If none of that explains it, the model may not be in the shipped roster at all: community rosters and the shipped build are not the same list.
